#13 Iowa  vs  #2 Michigan   Michigan

L    3 - 42

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

The Hawks moved the ball on their first possession down into Michigan's scoring range, but were unable to execute a halfback pass trick play. The short FG was uncharacteristically missed by Caleb Shudak. Michigan ran 67 yards for a TD, and it was quickly 7-0. On their next series, Michigan ran their own halfback pass, completing a 75-yard TD pass, taking a 14-0 lead. The Hawks drove down again, but could only muster a short FG. The Hawks were behind 14-3, but were still in the game despite the big plays from Michigan. After the first series in the 2nd half, Alex Padilla replaced Spencer Petras, and drove them down in scoring position, but could not execute a 4th and 5 from inside the Michigan 10-yard line. The game seemed to be over after that play.

Aside from a few drives, the offense struggled most of the night. Petras and Padilla were a combined 19 of 37 with 175 yards and one interception. The offense rushed 33 times for 104 yards. The defense eventually wore down against the big Wolverine line, and the athleticism was too much for Iowa, with Michigan making a series of acrobatic and one-handed catches. 3 TDs in the 4th quarter blew the game open. With the win, Michigan will go to the CFB playoffs to compete for the national title.

The Hawks did manage two interceptions, setting a new school record with 24 in a season.

However, the Hawks played tough defense and didn't give up. Down 63-44 in the second half, the game seemed to be over, but the Hawks went on a run. Kris Murray hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 2 points, 68-70 with 3 minutes to play, but they couldn't get any closer.

Patrick McCaffery scored 15 points, and the reserves played well. Tony Perkins scored 14 points in his home state, and Josh Ogundele played tough defense and scored 7 points.

After falling behind 21-6, the Hawks blocked a punt for a TD, got a safety, a FG and a late TD to take a 28-21 lead. An interception by Jermari Harris with less than a minute left on the goal line sealed the victory.

It seemed that Iowa was going to lose the game, struggling to stop Nebraska's offense, but a punt block by Henry Marchese and return by Kyler Fisher for a TD changed the momentum. Iowa pinned Nebraska deep into their own territory, then Lukas Van Ness forced an intentional grounding by Logan Smothers in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Iowa drove down the field, and a 4th FG by Caleb Shudak (51, 48, 36 and 44) tied the game. A long 55-yard run by Tyler Goodson setup a 2-yard QB sneak by Spencer Petras to take the lead 28-21. Goodson finished with 23 carries and 156 yards. Petras started the 2nd half after replacing Alex Padilla.

Iowa extended its winning streak to six games against the Cornhuskers, but it was a struggle against a Nebraska team that looked poorly this season. Keith Duncan did his part by making 4-of-5 field-goal attempts, including two in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks sealed the victory when senior end Chauncey Golston knocked the ball loose from QB Adrian Martinez near midfield. The fumble was recovered by defensive end Zach VanValkenburg.

The Huskers focused on shutting down the running game. Tyler Goodson finished with over 100 rushing yards but it took 30 carries.

The Iowa running game was impressive against a bad Minnesota rush defense. 35 carries for 236 yards and 4 TDs, most by Tyler Goodson. He had a career high 142 yards and 2 TDs on 20 carries. Iowa defense was able to keep the Gophers running game in check and grabbed two interceptions.

The Hawks struggled to take advantage of Purdue's loss of star receiver Rondale Moore and head coach Jeff Brohm's COVID diagnosis. Iowa struggled to stop David Bell (13 passes, 3 TDs and 121 yards) and RB Zander Horvath (21 carries for 129 yards). They also had 100 yards in penalties.

Spencer Petras' first start at QB showed signs of promise, going 22/39 and 265 yards passing, and ran for one TD. Iowa was able to rush for almost 200 yards, but lost two costly fumbles deep in Purdue territory.

Iowa punter Tory Taylor excelled in his first game with 6 punts averaging 44.2 yards and a long of 52 yards, with two punts downed inside the 20. Keith Duncan added 2 FGs.

In its first trip back to San Antonio since losing to California 37-3 in the inaugural 1993 Alamo Bowl, Iowa's defense put on a clinic in stopping the run, headed by sophomore linebackers Matt Hughes and Vernon Rollins, held Doak Walker Award winner and 2,000-yard rusher Byron Hanspard to 64 yards rushing on 18 attempts. Sedrick Shaw rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries to end his prolific career as the all-time leading rusher in Iowa Football history with 4,156 yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. In the process the Hawkeyes shut down Texas Tech for a dominating 27-0 win. The stickers were removed from the helmet in memory of Diane Mitchell, mother of linebacker Mark Mitchell, who died in a car accident on the trip down to Texas.

Iowa  vs  #7 Nebraska   Nebraska

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

What will likely be considered one of college football's major upsets of the year, Iowa survived a fast and furious finish to beat Nebraska 10-7, after losing 57-0 the previous year. It was Hayden Fry's first major upset at Iowa.

The Iowa defense forced 5 interceptions and held the Huskers to just 231 yards. They held Davenport-native and future NFL running back Roger Craig to 74 yards on 19 carries, one touchdown and two fumbles.

Iowa scored first with a 2-yard touchdown leap from Eddie Phillips. Lon Olejniczak kicked a 35-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to push the lead to 10-0. Reggie Roby was also key to the victory, averaging 55.8 yards on five punts with a long of 62 yards.

Iowa  vs  Arizona   Arizona

L    3 - 5

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

The defense played outstanding, but the kicking game struggles cost the Hawks the game. Less than three minutes into the game, Reggie Roby had a punt blocked out of the end zone by Arizona's Reggie Ware for a safety. With 8 seconds remaining in the first half, Roby had another kick blocked by Ware, thwarting a 42-yard FG attempt. In the second half, Roby hit on a 36-yard field goal attempt, but then missed a 48-yard try by inches with 2:28 remaining in the game.

Hayden Fry's first game as Hawkeye head coach. He faced off against Indiana head coach Lee Corso. The Hawks jumped to a 26-3 lead at half behind Dennis Mosley's four touchdowns. But the Hawks let Indiana rally from behind, giving up 20 4th quarter points, including a 66-yard game-winning pass to Lonnie Johnson with only 58 seconds to play. Mosley rushed for 142 yards on 20 carries for the Hawks, and quarterback Phil Suess passed for 227 yards and completed 17 of 30 passes.

"I was surprised with the polish Iowa showed with the new coach and new system," Corso agreed. "It wasn't so much against us - they're good'" - Lee Corso

OSU running back Archie Griffin broke the 100-yard mark for the 26th straight regular season game with 121 yards on 21 carries. The Iowa offense did surprisingly well despite the shutout, rushing for 172 yards, 14 first downs and had zero fumbles.

The first game between Iowa and Ohio State was played in Columbus on November 18. The Buckeyes became the first team since 1920 to lead the Hawkeyes, but Iowa beat Ohio State 12–9. Gordon Locke rushed for 126 yards and returned three kicks for 91 yards. His punt was also fumbled near the OSU goalline, which Iowa recovered, leading to a critical score. The Hawkeye victory ensured that the Buckeyes would suffer their first losing season since 1898.

11/22/1913

Iowa  @  Nebraska   Nebraska

L    0 - 12

Head Coach: Jesse Hawley

Nebraska capped a perfect season with a 12-0 win over the Hawks, who entered the game averaging 50 points per contest, but were without center Max Houghton due to an injury. The Hawkeyes couldn’t gain one yard when it mattered. With Nebraska clinging to a 6-0 lead, Iowa had three tries from the 1-yard line or closer, and three times the Hawkeyes were turned back. On fourth down, Iowa fullback and captain Ralph McGinnis tried a desperate leap over the line but was stopped short.

Iowa  vs  Nebraska   Nebraska

L    8 - 11

Head Coach: Mark Catlin

The Hawkeyes drop-kick attempt from Mike Hyland in the last four minutes of play was blocked, which would have been worth four points and put Iowa in the lead. The paper mentions that smoke from the University Power Plant made the play "disagreeable" in the second half.

11/2/1907

Iowa  vs  Wisconsin   Wisconsin

L    5 - 6

Head Coach: Mark Catlin

This game was notably called the "rabbit game." Iowa held a 5-0 halftime lead over Wisconsin when the two teams lined up for the second half kickoff. A rabbit ran out of Wisconsin's end zone and sprinted 110 yards downfield into Iowa's end zone. Wisconsin returned a punt late in the game for a touchdown, following the path of the rabbit, and gave the Badgers a 6-5 win with the successful extra point.
