Iowa competed very well with the defending national champions. It would be the only game all season that the Hawkeyes would complete more than 10 passes. The game had a bench clearing brawl late in the 4th quarter after freshman Jon Lazar hit on a USC player during an onside kick. Many players and assistant coaches were fighting each other on the field. Several fans had run onto the field and had to be removed. USC coach John McKay had this to say after the game, "You could say I'm impressed with the Iowa team, and very unimpressed with the Iowa fans. They were calling my players all sorts of things. They can call me names all they want to, but I don't think they should treat my kids like that. After all these kids don't come from Mars. I'm disenchanted with the fans when they throw beer cans at our bench. I think that's crap and I think the Iowa people are crap for letting it happen. It's all too bad, because the Iowa kids played their hearts out."
