Ohio State was not great this year, but the Hawks were really down and were outmatched. Iowa hung tough in the first quarter, giving up a lone touchdown to Ron Springs. The Hawkeyes were overrun in the second quarter, giving up 21 points to the Buckeyes in only 2 minutes and 10 seconds of game time. Jeff Green who had a promising game last week against the Gophers was injured early on in the game. He was replaced by Pete Gales who struggled, completing only 1 pass and throwing 2 interceptions leading to Ohio State touchdowns on consecutive possessions, including a pick six. Iowa went a quick 3 and out on it's next possession and on the very first play for the Buckeyes, Art Schlichter completed a 78 yard touchdown pass, and just like that it had gone from 10-0 to 31-0. The Hawkeyes didn't quit and scored a touchdown in the second half to avoid the shutout. The drive was led by Iowa's fourth string quarterback Bill Dolan.

Celebrity, Bob Hope made an appearance, and said a few words as a part of the halftime show at Ohio Stadium.
