Iowa looked like it might escape with a dramatic win on a Riley Moss 82-yard fumble return for a TD, but it was called back. Despite getting 3 turnovers, the offense could not capitalize against Illinois' good defense. The Hawks struggled as Spencer Petras completed 18 of 36 passes for 170 yards and had a late interception on a tipped pass. The only star was Sam LaPorta, who caught 9 passes for 100 yards. The defense was again outstanding, holding the Illini offense to field goals and getting a late interception as Illinois was about to score. But it was not enough to win the game. Illinois took the lead for good on backup walk-on kicker Fabrizio Pinton's 3rd field goal with 2:46 to go. It was Bret Bielema's first win over Iowa since becoming Illinois' head coach, and the first time Illinois beat Iowa since 2008 when it won on a last-second FG 27-24.
