Transfers Cade McNamara connected with Seth Anderson on the first pass of the year for a 36 yard TD, but the offense continued to struggle after a 14-0 lead. The running game also struggled. Utah State made some inopportune mistakes and bad luck that would have made the game much closer. They blocked an Iowa punt, but the ball still rolled 37 yards.

McNamara threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Erick All, another transfer from Michigan, on Iowa's next drive, and Drew Stevens' 20-yard field goal ended the first half, with Iowa leading 17-3. The Hawkeyes wouldn't score again until Kaleb Johnson's 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Replacing All-American Jack Campbell, LB Jay Higgins had the best performance of his career, ending with 16 tackles, including 12 solo stops.
