The Hawkeyes scored an upset victory over one of the top rated Pacific Coast teams in the preseason. The Hawks used aggressive defense forcing six Husky fumbles, and added a strong passing game with effective outside sweeps.

Played in the rain, Iowa took the lead in the second quarter when QB Fred Riddle hit flanker Paul Krause on a 44-yard TD pass. The Huskies tied the game late in the 3rd quarter with an 11-yard TD run. In the 4th quarter, Iowa started on their own 6-yard line. FB Bobby Grier sprinted 20 yards on the first play and then raced 43 more yards on the next play. Pass interference was called against Washington on a pass intended for Cloyd Webb in the end zone, giving the Hawkeyes a first down on the 1-yard line. Riddle sneaked over for the score and 14-7 lead. Jay Roberts clinched the victory with a 39-yard FG, setting a school record for distance. The old record was 35 yards by Bill Barbour (1943), Bill Reichardt (1951) and Bob Prescott (1957).
