In Hayden Fry's first game as Hawkeye head coach, Fry came out wearing white pants, and shoes, with a black "Iowa" jacket along with sun glasses. He was pacing back in forth during warm ups with his arms crossed behind his back. He faced off against a good Indiana team, who was coached by Lee Corso. The Hawkeyes gathered together outside the tunnel and jogged to the Iowa bench as a group together. The team would do the same thing on the way to the tunnel at half time. The Hawks jumped to a 26-3 lead at half behind Dennis Mosley's four touchdowns, with the first score coming after a blocked punt on Indiana's first possession. But the Hawks let Indiana rally from behind, giving up 20 4th quarter points, including a 66-yard game-winning pass to Lonnie Johnson with only 58 seconds to play. Mosley rushed for 142 yards on 20 carries for the Hawks, and quarterback Phil Suess passed for 227 yards and completed 17 of 30 passes.

It was a perfect first half except for a couple of plays. Then we folded our tent. We didn't play defense and we just didn't execute. We did an about-face after performing so well in the first half.
