C. Vivian Stringer

After leading small college Cheney State to the NCAA championship game in 1982, she became a hot coaching prospect. Iowa was able to convince her to leave after the 1983 season. She coached at Iowa 12 seasons from 1983 to 1995, where she compiled a record of 269–84 (.762) overall, and 169–45 (.790) in the Big Ten. She led the Hawks to the 1993 NCAA Final Four and twice to the Elite Eight. She also won or tied for 6 Big Ten titles.

She built a program that helped elevate women’s basketball to a whole new level at Iowa. When she arrived, the Hawkeyes had won just seven games the season before her arrival and were ranked 299 out of 302 teams nationally in attendance. She brought excitement and winning to the program, and helped coordinate and break the NCAA women's basketball attendance record with 22,157 on February 3, 1985 in a game against Ohio State.

She left Iowa for Rutgers, which was closer to where she grew up. She continued her winning ways, leading them to the Final Four, becoming the first coach to lead 3 different schools to the Final Four.

In 2006, she was inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame.

Nike unveiled the C. Vivian Stringer Child Development Center in September 9, 2008. She is the third woman, the second coach, and the first African-American woman to have a building named after her on Nike's campus.

She was inducted to the 2009 Hall of Fame class with Michael Jordan, John Stockton, David Robinson and long-time Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.

On October 19, 2022, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights announced the renaming of the court inside the basketball stadium in Piscataway, NJ in honor of her. She was also named a 2024 Naismith Outstanding Contributors to Basketball Award Winner, and was recognized during the Iowa-Rutgers women's basketball game on Jan 5th, 2024.

Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph (3/4/2008)
'Work hard, and don’t look for excuses', C. Vivian Stringer’s parents told her, 'and you can achieve anything.' But her faith and perseverance would be tested many times.

A gifted athlete, she had to fight for a place on an all-White cheerleading squad in the 60s. In 1981, just as her coaching career was taking off, her 14-month-old daughter, Nina, was stricken with spinal meningitis. Nina would never walk or talk again. Still grieving, Stringer brought a small, poor, historically Black college to the national championships - a triumph hailed as “Hoosiers with an all-female cast.” In 1991, her husband, Bill, fell dead of a sudden heart attack, but that same year, she led yet another young team to the Final Four.

Through these dark times and others, Stringer has carried her burdens with grace. Given her history, it was no surprise that she led her team to respond to Don Imus’s slurs with dignity and courage.

Standing Tall is a story of quiet strength in the face of punishing odds. Above all, it is an extraordinary love story - love for the game, for the players she has coached, for her close-knit family, and for the husband she lost far too soon. It will resonate long after the last word.

FAMOUS QUOTES about C. Vivian Stringer

Jolette Law My sophomore year, (C. Vivian Stringer) turned the program over to me. She gave me the keys. She said, ‘OK, you’ve got the keys. You’ve learned. You’ve stayed patient. Now it’s your time to lead this team.’ I went from an ‘unknown’ to a ‘known’ in one year. All of the lessons she taught me made me what I am today. - Link to source

Jolette Law So many of my memories there, it was about how I grew as a person. They always say Iowa is ‘a place to grow,’ and I can say I grew up quickly. I was exposed to a lot. Coach Stringer was a coach who really challenged me. She had high academic standards, which really prepared me for what I was going to embark on in life. Those long nights, staying up, studying, being prepared. At Iowa, you had to be on top of your game. - Link to source
