RECAP

MSU was able to move the ball against the tough Iowa defense most of the game, but Iowa chipped away with field goals to keep it close. The Hawk defense shut down the Spartans in the 4th quarter, and pulled ahead on an electrifying 70-yard punt return from Cooper DeJean to take a 23-16 lead with less than 4 minutes remaining.

Despite the Spartan offensive success, the defense only gave up 3 FGs in the first half. Iowa added a FG in the 1st quarter, and then capitalized on a turnover. DeJean was the star, getting an interception in the end zone in the 2nd quarter to stop a Spartan drive. Iowa answered with an 80-yard drive capped by a 13-yard TD reception by Erick All from QB Deacon Hill for a 10-6 Iowa lead. Hill replaced Cade McNamara, who left the game with a serious knee injury in the 1st quarter.

MSU kicker Jonathan Kim broke a Kinnick Stadium record with a 58-yard FG right before halftime, and the Hawks were lucky to be ahead 10-9.

But in the 2nd half, the Spartans shocked the Hawkeye fans by taking a 16-10 lead on a fumble "scoop and score" in the 3rd quarter. Iowa kicker Drew Stevens also had a great game, kicking 4 FGs, including a 53-yard FG that cut the deficit to 16-13.

Iowa forced four turnovers in the game (interceptions by DeJean, Sebastian Castro and Jermari Harris and a fumble recovery by Ethan Hurkett) and stopped Michigan State on a fourth-and-1 at its own 30-yard line in the third quarter.

The 3rd Stevens FG tied the game at 16-16 which set up DeJean's heroics. Stevens added the insurance FG to make it a 10-point game with just one minute remaining. Harris' interception sealed the victory.
