RECAP

It was no surprise when Iowa led only 3-0 at halftime, as the betting line dropped to one of the lowest all-time for total points scored at 27.5. The big difference was that the Iowa offense was showing signs of life. Iowa had a chance to score late in the 2nd quarter with the ball on the 12-yard line, but Deacon Hill threw an interception. In the 3rd quarter, he had his longest completion of the day when he connected with backup TE Zach Ortwerth for a 54-yard completion, setting up Iowa’s 2nd FG in the 3rd quarter, which made it 6-0.

In the 4th quarter, the Hawks moved down the field for a rare TD. Jaziun Patterson scored on a 4-yard TD run, but the Hawks failed on the 2-point conversion. The Hawks added a 3rd FG to make it 15-0. Rutgers was forced to play catch up, which led to an interception by Quinn Schulte, who returned it inside the 10-yard line. Deacon Hill threw a screen pass to Kaleb Brown for his first career TD to put the game out of reach. Hill finished 20-for-31 for 223 yards and a TD, by far his best performance in college. Leshon Williams led the rushing attack with 63 yards on 13 attempts.

The Hawkeyes outgained Rutgers, 402-127, and held the Scarlet Knights to just 34 rushing yards. It was the first time since a 51-14 rout at Maryland in 2021 that Iowa's offense gained over 400 yards. They also gained 21 first downs.

Iowa’s defense and special teams were superb as usual, pitching a shutout, making 3 FGs and trading punts for positive yardage. Jay Higgins led the defense with 8 tackles and Nick Jackson had 7 tackles.

Based on the results of other games, the win guaranteed Iowa will at least tie for the Big Ten West title, and can win it outright if they win at least one of the two remaining games (home against Illinois and at Nebraska).
