1976-1977 Iowa Football Year in Review
<< 1975-19761977-1978 >>

The Hawkeyes had an up and down season, with huge road wins at Penn State, Minnesota and Michigan State, and tough losses against Indiana and Wisconsin. Iowa's schedule came with consecutive games against Penn State, USC, and Ohio State, which would be a tough stretch in any year.

Iowa was plagued with injuries at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. They also lost their center Jim Hilgenberg in the first game of the season. As a team, they completed 36% of their passes for 972 yards on the season. Quarterback Butch Caldwell led the team with 7 touchdowns on the season, 3 passing and 4 rushing. Wide receiver Bill Schultz had 3 receiving touchdowns, and led the team with 288 receiving yards. Jon Lazar was the leading rusher with 392 yards rushing. The defense was led by linebacker Tom Rusk who was named second team all conference at linebacker. Jim Caldwell and Rod Sears led the Hawkeye secondary.
