RECAP

QB Butch Caldwell returned from injury to complete 7 of 12 passes for 111 yards. The balanced rushing attack was led by Jon Lazar with 90 yards (including 2 TDs, one on a fake punt "boomeroosky" 40-yard TD run with only one shoe on). Tom Renn added 69 yards rushing and 49 yards came from Caldwell. Daryl Walls also added 45 yards on only 5 carries. The Hawks defense held MSU to 3 points until the 4th quarter, but gave up two TDs to make the game more interesting.

Nick Quartaro set some school records in the game. He kicked 3 FGs from 32, 25, and 38 yards, and broke Bob Anderson's career FG record with 17. He also ended in 2nd place all-time for career points with 106 (behind Dusty Rice).

It was the first time since 1960 that an Iowa team won 3 times on the road in a season.

Jon Lazar The ball went to Tom Grine. Grine handed it to me from behind, between my legs. I held up about two seconds so everybody would think the play was going the other way. But one Michigan State player grabbed me by the ankle and tore off my shoe. So I had to go the whole distance without a shoe. Jon Lazar Our fake fooled everybody except Michigan State's back-side end. He grabbed me by the right foot and held on. I thought, golly, I've got to get at least a yard or two for the first down. So I finally jerked my foot right out of my shoe and took off. He was welcome to my shoe. I had great blocking all the way to the goal.
