Jon Lazar attended South Tama High School in Tama, Iowa. He originally committed to Iowa State, but changed his mind and signed with Iowa.

In his Iowa career, he rushed 304 times for 1225 yards (4 yards per carry), and 7 TDs. He also caught the ball 44 times for 382 yards (8.7 yards per reception and 3 TDs). He was named All-Big Ten honorable mention in 1977 as a fullback.
