The Hawkeyes fumbled 6 times on the day and were unable to muster any points offensively. Iowa wide receiver Jim McNulty dislocated his finger in pregame warmups and was limited in action. Quarterback Butch Caldwell was injured during the game and will be out for the rest of the season. He was replaced by Tom McLaughlin, who had to play despite not practicing all week with a sore shoulder. Running back Tom Renn did not practice all week either with an injury and was replaced by Dennis Mosley, who injured his ankle and missed the second half. Senior Bobby Lawson, a member of the Iowa track team, was put in at running back and ran for 49 yards on 7 carries.
