1949-1950 Iowa Basketball Year in Review
<< 1948-19491950-1951 >>

This was a good year for Iowa basketball. With only one regular on hand from the '48-'49 squad, luckily they had an outstanding crop of sophomores. Iowa posted a record of I5 victories in 22 contests, including a 6-6 conference mark and a fifth place finish. It was a bizarre year, as no less than three coaches guided the Hawks during the season. "Pops" Harrison started the season, but when ill-health forced him to the sidelines. Rollie Williams took over for three weeks, and then returned the reins to Harrison. After two conference games, he retired and the 36-year old freshman coach Frank (Bucky) O'Connor took over for most of the conference games.

During the non-conference, they had a nice win over Notre Dame on the road. In conference play, they were unable to win on the road, and added some thrilling triumphs at home (notably the 65-64 win against Indiana and a 70-65 win over Illinois).

The Hawks suffered their first loss against Wisconsin in overtime. A lost in the final game of the season against Minnesota cost the Hawks a tie for 3rd place.
