Hubert Johnston attended Wheeling High School and lived in Wheeling, West Virginia. Listed as Ubhert Johnston in letterwinners guide, but appears to be a mispelling. In high school, he was an all-state center in football, and an outstanding basketball player and hurdler in track and field. He was unusually tall for a lineman in the 1950's, standing 6 feet 8 inches.

He played one season on the basketball team, but focused on football for the rest of his Iowa career.

He was drafted in the 8th Round of the 1952 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins.
