Jack Dittmer attended Elkader High School and lived in Elkader, Iowa. He was a three-sport star playing basketball, baseball, and football, earning 12 varsity letters in total. In his senior year, he was selected the best high-school baseball player in the state of Iowa, and he went on to play in a National All-star Game.

He continued to play all three sports at Iowa. He became one of only six Iowa athletes to rack up nine varsity letters over his playing career (four baseball, four football, one basketball).

In football, he earned all-conference and second-team AP Big Ten honors in 1948 after leading Iowa in scoring. In 1949, he was named team MVP after setting a Big Ten single-season record for receiving yards. He earned honorable mention All-American after setting 5 school records for receiving.

He lettered in basketball in 1950. He was also a key component and co-captain of a Big Ten Champion baseball team in 1949, committing only one error on 107 chances during a senior season which led to a second team All-American award and first-team All-Big Ten recognition.

After Iowa, he played six seasons in Major League Baseball with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves and the Detroit Tigers.

He was elected to the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978, and inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.

Born 1/10/1928 and died on 5/31/2014 at the age of 86.
