Summary: Change was probably the best word to describe the Iowa football program in 1971 as a new head football coach with a new system of playing the game took the reins. But the change was not enough to prevent the Hawkeyes from suffering through a 1-10 season, the most losses ever by an Iowa football team. Prior to the start of fall practice, several starters from the previous season were sidelined with injuries, further depleting the already thin ranks. Before the end of the season, several more starters would be sidelined and this seemed to bleed the team slowly. Because of the rash of injuries, several players were thrust into starting roles that may never have played under usual conditions. If adjusting to new football coach Frank Lauterbur's system wasn't enough, Iowa‘s schedule was rated among the toughest in the nation that year. Five of the Iowa opponents, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Northwestern all finished with winning records, while two other schools, Indiana and Illinois, were in the upswing when they faced the Hawkeyes. If things weren't tough enough already, Iowa played an eleven-game schedule and for the first time, faced all of its Big Ten opponents. Iowa opened the season at Ohio State, not the most hospitable place to launch a young team and a new coach.

Conference: Big Ten

Head Coach: Frank Lauterbur
