Dan McCarney        

HIGH SCHOOL: Dan McCarney attended City High School and lived in or near Iowa City, Iowa. He was a first-team all-state lineman and multi-sport star. He helped transform the team from 0-9 in 1968 to 8-1 in 1970, winning the conference title. He chose Iowa over Iowa State.

COLLEGE: He was a three-year starter as an offensive lineman, earning letters from 1972 through the 1974 season, and was named team captain in 1974.

PROFESSIONAL: He signed with the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos after college, but didn't make the team.

OTHER: He returned to Iowa as a graduate assistant from 1977 to 1978 under Bob Commings. When Hayden Fry arrived at Iowa in 1979, he named McCarney as defensive line coach, a post he held for 10 years, during which Iowa made two appearances in the Rose Bowl.

As a college coach, he joined Barry Alvarez in Wisconsin from 1990-1994, then took the Iowa State head coach job in 1995. In 1998, he was the first former Hayden Fry assistant coach to defeat him, which also ended a 15-game losing streak to the Hawks, and started a 5-game winning streak over Iowa.

In 2007, he coached at South Florida, then moved to Florida from 2008-2010, and took over the head coaching job at North Texas from 2011-2015. North Texas was the same school that Hayden Fry was coaching when he accepted the job at Iowa.

He was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2021.
