Big Ten West Division ChampionsBig Ten West Division Champions

The Hawks started 6-0, defeating ranked Indiana, Iowa State and Penn State to ascend to #2 in the country. Two bad losses to Purdue and Wisconsin brought them back to reality. They won the next 4 games to finish the regular season at 10-2, and won the West Division championship. The strength of the team was defense and special teams, as the offense was one of the lowest ranked in the country.

#15 Iowa  vs  #22 Kentucky   Kentucky

L    17 - 20

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

Kentucky drove 80 yards in eight plays on a drive that ended with a game-winning touchdown with under 2 minutes remaining. Spencer Petras threw his third interception of the day on the ensuing drive to end hopes of a comeback.

The Hawks started out in a deficit, struggling to stop the Wildcat offense, and having difficulty moving the ball, trailing 13-3 at halftime. But they came out a different team in the 2nd half, getting 6 sacks on defense for the game, and running the ball for 173 yards on 30 carries (about 6 yards per carry).

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops was a former player and grad assistant at Iowa in the late 1980's.

#13 Iowa  vs  #2 Michigan   Michigan

L    3 - 42

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

The Hawks moved the ball on their first possession down into Michigan's scoring range, but were unable to execute a halfback pass trick play. The short FG was uncharacteristically missed by Caleb Shudak. Michigan ran 67 yards for a TD, and it was quickly 7-0. On their next series, Michigan ran their own halfback pass, completing a 75-yard TD pass, taking a 14-0 lead. The Hawks drove down again, but could only muster a short FG. The Hawks were behind 14-3, but were still in the game despite the big plays from Michigan. After the first series in the 2nd half, Alex Padilla replaced Spencer Petras, and drove them down in scoring position, but could not execute a 4th and 5 from inside the Michigan 10-yard line. The game seemed to be over after that play.

Aside from a few drives, the offense struggled most of the night. Petras and Padilla were a combined 19 of 37 with 175 yards and one interception. The offense rushed 33 times for 104 yards. The defense eventually wore down against the big Wolverine line, and the athleticism was too much for Iowa, with Michigan making a series of acrobatic and one-handed catches. 3 TDs in the 4th quarter blew the game open. With the win, Michigan will go to the CFB playoffs to compete for the national title.

The Hawks did manage two interceptions, setting a new school record with 24 in a season.

#17 Iowa  @  Nebraska   Nebraska

W    28 - 21

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

After falling behind 21-6, the Hawks blocked a punt for a TD, got a safety, a FG and a late TD to take a 28-21 lead. An interception by Jermari Harris with less than a minute left on the goal line sealed the victory.

It seemed that Iowa was going to lose the game, struggling to stop Nebraska's offense, but a punt block by Henry Marchese and return by Kyler Fisher for a TD changed the momentum. Iowa pinned Nebraska deep into their own territory, then Lukas Van Ness forced an intentional grounding by Logan Smothers in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Iowa drove down the field, and a 4th FG by Caleb Shudak (51, 48, 36 and 44) tied the game. A long 55-yard run by Tyler Goodson setup a 2-yard QB sneak by Spencer Petras to take the lead 28-21. Goodson finished with 23 carries and 156 yards. Petras started the 2nd half after replacing Alex Padilla.

W    17 - 12

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

The defense got back to its old ways, holding the Wildcat offense to 93 rushing yards, and grabbing 3 interceptions, including two from Dane Belton. The last one was crucial, with Northwestern driving for the potential go-ahead touchdown with 2 minutes remaining.

#9 Iowa  @  Wisconsin   Wisconsin

L    7 - 27

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

Iowa fell behind 20-0 in the first half, and had no answer on offense for Wisconsin's defense. Two turnovers deep in Iowa territory gave Wisconsin some easy scores. Over the first two quarters, Iowa was shut out, gained only 17 yards (including -13 rushing), managed to pick up only one first down, lost three fumbles, and gave up four sacks.

Iowa mustered a touchdown in the second half, but never was competitive. The Hawkeyes only gained 156 yards the whole game, and it looked like a repeat of numerous other road trips to Madison. Iowa’s streak of allowing 24 points or fewer has ended at 29 games.

#2 Iowa  vs  Purdue   Purdue

L    7 - 24

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

David Bell continued to wreak havoc against Iowa. He caught 11 passes for 240 yards and 1 TD. It wasn't much different than the two previous games against Iowa (both over 100 yards receiving). His three-year, three-game totals against Iowa: 35 receptions, 558 yards, five touchdowns. Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell went 30-for-40 and 375 yards and 2 TDs.

The Hawks have lost 4 of the last 5 games against Purdue, and this game was never in doubt. The Hawks struggled on offense with 4 turnovers, and only caused 1 turnover. The offense struggled to move the ball, and played from behind most of the day.

#3 Iowa  vs  #4 Penn State   Penn State

W    23 - 17

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

Spencer Petras threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Nico Ragaini to complete Iowa's comeback from a two-touchdown deficit (behind 17-3), all accomplished while Penn State's offense did next to nothing after quarterback Sean Clifford was knocked out of the game. He led the Lions to 17 points early in the game.

Iowa won the field-position battle thanks to the work of punter Tory Taylor, who repeatedly pinned Penn State deep in its own end after Clifford went out in the second quarter. Iowa kept adding critical points with 3 field goals by Caleb Shudak, including a 48-yard FG.

The sellout crowd of 70,000 had a major impact when the Lions were near their own end zone, forcing numerous false starts. The defense settled down, holding PSU to 3 points in the second half, and getting 4 more interceptions on the day.
