Kelby Telander attended Liberty High School and lived in North Liberty, Iowa. He was honored as a Kid Captain during the 2009 season. He underwent surgery for a cochlear implant, a surgically implanted device that directly stimulates the auditory nerves and restored his hearing. He is the first Kid Captain to become a member of the football team.
