The #4 Hawkeyes had visions of Pasadena dancing in their heads. For the Wildcats, it looks like Kinnick Stadium trips of old as they quickly fell into a 10-0 hole. Things turned around completely when Northwestern sacked Ricky Stanzi in the end zone, breaking his leg, and causing a fumble for a touchdown. Iowa failed to score the rest of the game, and their undefeated season was over.

#6 Iowa  vs  Northwestern   Northwestern

W    62 - 10

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

Iowa sent its seniors out in style as it defeated Northwestern 62-10, in their final game at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes dominated the Wildcats offensively, defensively, and on special teams. Iowa had 465 yards of total offense, scoring touchdowns on eight of its first nine possessions. The defense held Northwestern to 298 yards total offense and collected three interceptions. Iowa's special teams tallied 144 yards in punt and kickoff returns, including one punt return for a score.

Iowa jumped out to a quick 14-point lead in the first five minutes after a seven-yard touchdown run by RB Jermelle Lewis and a 40-yard scoring pass from QB Brad Banks to WR Maurice Brown. Banks added touchdown runs of nine and 19 yards and also connected with Brown for a 65 yard score. The Hawkeyes led 35-10 at halftime en route to their 52-point win. The 62 points is the most points scored under Coach Ferentz.

All the points scored in the second half were by Iowa, beginning with Ed Hinkel's 58-yard punt return for a score. TE Dallas Clark caught a 28-yard pass, while WR C.J. Jones tallied a 22-yard touchdown reception from QB Nathan Chandler. RB Marcus Schnoor closed the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run.

Banks led Iowa, completing 10-10 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed five times for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Brown caught four passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half. RB Fred Russell rushed 17 times for 100 yards to lead Iowa's running backs as he surpassed 1000 yards for the season. Defensively, LB Fred Barr (13) and Jared Clauss (9) led the Hawkeyes in tackles. Senior FS Scott Boleyn collected his first and second career interceptions, while DE Jonathon Babineaux recorded Iowa's other theft. DE Matt Roth registered his team-leading eighth sack.

Iowa  vs  Northwestern   Northwestern

W    26 - 24

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

Hayden Fry's final win of his coaching career came against the Northwestern Wildcats in Kinnick Stadium in 1998. Iowa scored on a safety and a 49-yard pass play to break a 17-17 tie. For the second straight season, a safety played a major role in the outcome, as Northwestern used a safety in 1997 in a 15-14 win. Iowa led 17-0 in the first half before Northwestern fought back to tie the game at 17 with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Following a 57-yard punt by Jason Baker, the Hawkeye defense forced intentional grounding from the endzone to gain the safety. On its next possession Iowa scored on a 49-yard pass from Randy Reiners to Kevin Kasper to increase the margin to nine. Northwestern scored a final touchdown with 1:13 remaining, but couldn't recover the onside kick. Reiners completed 17 of 30 passes for 249 yards and two scores. RB Ladell Betts rushed 30 times for 112 yards and had nine receptions for 96 yards. The Iowa defense was led by LB Matt Hughes, who had 14 tackles. Freshman LB Aaron Kampman had nine stops and tackle Jared DeVries had eight tackles.

#22 Iowa  @  Northwestern   Northwestern

L    14 - 15

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

Tavian Banks had 30 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa, which again was without injured quarterback Matt Sherman. Banks raced 46 yards for a score to give Iowa the lead less than six minutes into the contest, and gave the lead back to the Hawkeyes with a one-yard TD run with 1:41 left in the first half. It was his 19th score of the season and 17th on the ground, both school records. Tim Dwight was limited to 32 yards on two catches and was limited to one punt return for 13 yards as Northwestern repeatedly kicked away from him.

Iowa did not help itself by missing two field goals, throwing an interception and failing on a 4th-and-3 from the Wildcats 27 within its last six possessions. The Hawkeyes were 0-for-4 on field goals. Chad Johnson missed a 50-yarder and Zach Bromert a 43-yarder in the second quarter. Bromert missed a 33-yarder in the third quarter and Johnson was way short and right on a 47-yard attempt with 2:57 to play. They also had a bad snap during a punt resulting in a safety. Randy Reiners was 4-of-10 for just 71 yards and an interception.

#23 Iowa  vs  #18 Northwestern   Northwestern

L    13 - 40

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

What started out auspiciously for No. 23-ranked Iowa ended in disaster as Northwestern all-American Darnell Autry riddled the Iowa defense for a career-high 240 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the 18th-ranked Wildcats' coasted to a 40-13 win. It was Northwestern's first win at Kinnick Stadium since 1971. Iowa held Autry and the powerful Northwestern offense in check through the first quarter, but the Wildcats opened a 10-0 margin on a 23-yard touchdown pass from wideout D'Wayne Bates to tight end Darren Drexler early in the second. Iowa countered with an 80-yard drive of its own capped by Tim Dwight's 29-yard touchdown reception from Matt Sherman. Autry scored both Wildcat touchdowns in the third quarter, first on a nine-yard run and then on a 15-yard pass just before the beginning of the fourth. He added a 41-yard touchdown run at the beginning of the fourth quarter and finished Northwestern's scoring with an 18-yard run. Dwight, who finished with a career-high 188 receiving yards, set up Tavian Banks' 10-yard scoring pass from Sherman with catches of 49 and 38 yards. Vernon Rollins had his best game of the season defensively with 12 stops.

Iowa  @  #5 Northwestern   Northwestern

L    20 - 31

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

Iowa lost for the first time in 21 years to #5 Northwestern, 31-20. After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, on a 50-yard field goal by Northwestern kicker Brian Gowins, the Hawkeyes scored three second quarter touchdowns to take a 20-17 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Northwestern took the ball on the opening drive and scored on a three-yard run by Darnell Autry. In the fourth quarter, Northwestern's Hudhaifa Ismaeli returned an Iowa fumble 31 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory. The final stats didn't reflect the outcome as Iowa recorded more first downs, rushing and passing yards than did Northwestern. Despite the loss, Sedrick Shaw rushed for 135 yards and became Iowa's all-time leading rusher with 2,653 yards. Tom Knight returned his second interception for a touchdown this year, and Vernon Rollins had recorded 17 tackles, including three for a loss.

Iowa  vs  Northwestern   Northwestern

W    49 - 13

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

Redshirt freshman QB Matt Sherman stole the show in his first start, completing 19 of 24 passes for 331 yards. The Hawkeyes' 602 yards of total offense and five turnovers on defense brought back a glimpse of the past for Iowa coach Hayden Fry. It was Iowa's 21st straight win over the Wildcats.

Harold Jasper got things started in the first quarter when he reeled in a 26-yard pass, for his 100th career reception. While reaching the century mark was a milestone, Jasper's 101st catch was bigger. Two plays later, he made a diving grab in the end zone for the first score of the afternoon.

Free safety Bo Porter led the Hawks with 10 tackles, one interception, and his first career touchdown when he picked up a punt blocked by Jason House in the third quarter.

Sedrick Shaw rushed for 114 for the game, including a 19-yard touchdown run. He needs only 71 more yards to reach 1,000 yards on the season.

Ryan Terry gave the seniors' farewell an appropriate ending. He broke away and took the ball 71 yards for the Hawkeyes' final touchdown late in the game.

Northwestern QB Steve Schnur was sacked five times for a loss of 27 yards and had eight passes broken up, and Iowa extended its winning streak over Northwestern to 20 games. Iowa QB Paul Burmeister completed 17 of 25 passes for 234 yards. He threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Scott Slutzker to put the Hawkeyes ahead 13-6 going into halftime. The second quarter drive covered 80 yards in eight plays and 1 minute, 22 seconds. Special teams were a key for Iowa. Todd Romano kicked a difficult and important 37-yard field goal, and punter Nick Gallery had a 70-yard punt into the wind, which was downed on the 1-yard line, and averaged 45 yards.

The Hawkeyes gained 90 yards rushing, and fullback Cliff King had 69 yards on 14 carries. In Iowa's last touchdown series, King ran for gains of 14, 12, 11 and five yards.
