HIGH SCHOOL: Jay Norvell attended Memorial High School and lived in or near Madison, Wisconsin. He was named first team all-state defensive back, and was named all-conference and all-city, helping lead his team to the conference championship his junior season. He also played basketball and baseball.

COLLEGE: He redshirted in the 1981 season, and saw limited time during the 1982 and 1983 seasons. He played special teams, where he led the team with 14 tackles on the season. During his senior season, he helped lead the Hawks to one of the best seasons in school history, and was named First-team All-Big Ten. He tied the school record with 7 interceptions in a season, set by Nile Kinnick in 1939.

PROFESSIONAL: He played linebacker with the Chicago Bears for 6 games during the 1987 season.

OTHER: He stayed on at Iowa as a graduate assistant for the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He was an assistant coach at many different schools, including Northern Iowa, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Nebraska, Texas, Arizona State and Oklahoma. He also coached in the NFL for the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders. He was named head coach at Nevada in 2017, then left for the head coaching job at Colorado State in 2022.
