This was Alden Knipe's first as head coach of the Hawkeyes and Iowa's first year as an independent after the dissolution of the Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA). Iowa later joined the Western Conference in 1900.

Friction between Knipe and older players escalated when the team started the season 1–4–1, losing to Iowa State Normal College 11-5. Ralph Blackmore led the "Blackmore Revolt", in which he and four other upperclassmen quit the team due to lack of equipment and input into who should play. Knipe simply started younger players, including Clyde Williams, who was a freshman at the time. With Williams at quarterback, Iowa finished the year 2–0–1, ending the season with a 6–5 victory over rival Nebraska. The revolt resulted in a multi-year winning streak for the Iowa program.

There were also a team called the "Iowa Volunteers" that went to California to play Stanford and Cal at the end of October, but not sure how they were associated with the university.
