Ben Trickey      Iowa

Position(s): F

Ben Trickey attended Marshalltown High School and lived in Marshalltown, Iowa. In his senior year he was chosen captain and selected on an All-State football team, and earned 3 letters in basketball and was twice named All-State in basketball.

His uncle, Jim Trickey was the first All-American football player at Iowa. which inspired Ben to want to become a Hawkeye.

At Iowa, he was a three-sport athlete that earned 8 varsity letters as a walk-on, playing basketball, baseball and football.

In basketball, he was a three year starter as a forward. As a senior, he started and averaged 13.5 points per game in basketball. He held the single-game scoring record for Iowa that season (27 points), was co-captain of the 1942-43 team, and set the Iowa Fieldhouse and Big Ten scoring record (161 points), and was voted team MVP.

After Iowa, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 14th Round in 1945, and received an opportunity to try out for the Detroit Lions in 1946. He made the preseason squad, and played in the first exhibition game, but his leg injuries from the war proved too much of a handlcap.

He later coached Marshalltown High to the state championship in 1956.

After his death, a scholarship was established in his name (Ben Trickey Memorial Scholarship) by his wife, Vivian. It is awarded annually to a student-athlete at Iowa since 1977.

Born 9/17/1921 and died on 5/3/1975 at the age of 53.

Drafted Round 14 by Detroit Lions in 1945
