Iowa  @  Michigan State

L    28 - 31

The Hawkeyes struggled defensively at the outset of the game against the Spartans, allowing them to score on their first three possessions. However, the Hawkeyes found themselves down by just seven, 28-21, heading into the locker room at halftime after Iowa's offense capitalized on senior Tim podge's blocked punt with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter. With a minute left, the Hawkeyes trailing by 10, Iowa went 58 yards in six plays for a touchdown capped off by McCann's second rushing score of the afternoon. But six seconds on the clock didn't allow Iowa many options. The Spartans snagged the onside kick attempt to seal the victory.

Iowa  vs  Western Michigan

L    21 - 27

The Hawks traded field goals to start the game, but the Broncos got at TD late in the 1st quarter. Another Nate Kaeding FG brought it to 10-6, a 76-yard TD pass, followed by a 36-yard TD pass had the Hawks down 24-6 at halftime. Scott Mullen connected on TD passes to Kahlil Hill for 75 yards and Kevin Kasper for 6 yards to cut the deficit to 24-20, but they could not get any more offense in the 4th quarter. The Broncos added another FG to seal the upset win. It was the first game played between Iowa and Western Michigan (a member of the MAC conference), and it was the school's first victory over a Big Ten opponent.

Iowa  @  Minnesota

L    7 - 49

It turned out to be a sad ending for the season and a 20-year stay at Iowa for Coach Hayden Fry. The legendary Hawkeye coach announced his retirement three days following this 49-7 loss to the Gophers at the HHH Metrodome. The Gophers scored 21 second quarter points in a span of 6:24 and 21 more in the third quarter in just 7:25. It was Minnesota's biggest league victory since 1949. The Hawkeyes, in losing their fifth straight, finished the season with a 3-8 record. Minnesota's offense piled up 501 yards while the defense kept Iowa out of the endzone until Robbie Crockett's one-yard run with 45 seconds left to play. The Gophers grabbed four interceptions and allowed Iowa only 221 yards of total offense. Minnesota's Tom Hamner led all rushers with 148 yards. Quarterback Bill Cockerham ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more. Jeff Kramer (11 tackles) and Matt Bowen (10) led Iowa's defensive effort.

Iowa  @  Indiana

L    7 - 14

Indiana used a pair of scoring drives in the final quarter to take a 14-7 win over Iowa. The Hawkeyes led 7-0 after an 84-yard drive to start the third quarter. The score came on an 11-yard pass from Randy Reiners to TE Zeron Flemister. Indiana scored its first touchdown with 8:40 remaining, concluding a 99-yard drive. But DT Jared DeVries blocked the extra point attempt and Iowa led 7-6. The Hoosiers would drive 75 yards in the final two minutes, scoring with 41 seconds to play on an eight-yard run by QB Antwaan Randle El. The Hawkeye defense was dominant for the first three quarters. Iowa's offense was led by RB Ladell Betts, who carried 31 times for 151 yards, the most ever yards in a single game by an Iowa freshman. Iowa's offense had its best rushing day of the season with 172 yards, but Iowa quarterbacks completed nine of 21 passes for just 108 yards. The Iowa defense was led by DB Matt Bowen with 14 tackles, a pass interception and a forced fumble.

#22 Iowa  @  Northwestern

L    14 - 15

Tavian Banks had 30 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa, which again was without injured quarterback Matt Sherman. Banks raced 46 yards for a score to give Iowa the lead less than six minutes into the contest, and gave the lead back to the Hawkeyes with a one-yard TD run with 1:41 left in the first half. It was his 19th score of the season and 17th on the ground, both school records. Tim Dwight was limited to 32 yards on two catches and was limited to one punt return for 13 yards as Northwestern repeatedly kicked away from him.

Iowa did not help itself by missing two field goals, throwing an interception and failing on a 4th-and-3 from the Wildcats 27 within its last six possessions. The Hawkeyes were 0-for-4 on field goals. Chad Johnson missed a 50-yarder and Zach Bromert a 43-yarder in the second quarter. Bromert missed a 33-yarder in the third quarter and Johnson was way short and right on a 47-yard attempt with 2:57 to play. They also had a bad snap during a punt resulting in a safety. Randy Reiners was 4-of-10 for just 71 yards and an interception.

#11 Iowa  @  #7 Ohio State

L    7 - 23

The Buckeyes stifled the Hawkeyes in every phase of the game. They held Tavian Banks to 84 yards on 22 carries, 125 yards beneath his average, and only four rushing first downs. Iowa began the day with averages of 55 points and 568 yards a game, was held to one touchdown and 308 yards. Iowa's only points came on Matt Sherman's 4-yard pass to Austin Wheatley. He completed 18 of 37 passes for 189 yards and one interception. Tony Collins and Tim Dwight, the Iowa punt returners who had averaged 17.8 yards a runback, did not produce a yard today with no kickoff returns. The Hawks had a potential game-tying, 42-yard field-goal attempt blocked in the second quarter.

#23 Iowa  vs  #18 Northwestern

L    13 - 40

What started out auspiciously for No. 23-ranked Iowa ended in disaster as Northwestern all-American Darnell Autry riddled the Iowa defense for a career-high 240 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the 18th-ranked Wildcats' coasted to a 40-13 win. It was Northwestern's first win at Kinnick Stadium since 1971. Iowa held Autry and the powerful Northwestern offense in check through the first quarter, but the Wildcats opened a 10-0 margin on a 23-yard touchdown pass from wideout D'Wayne Bates to tight end Darren Drexler early in the second. Iowa countered with an 80-yard drive of its own capped by Tim Dwight's 29-yard touchdown reception from Matt Sherman. Autry scored both Wildcat touchdowns in the third quarter, first on a nine-yard run and then on a 15-yard pass just before the beginning of the fourth. He added a 41-yard touchdown run at the beginning of the fourth quarter and finished Northwestern's scoring with an 18-yard run. Dwight, who finished with a career-high 188 receiving yards, set up Tavian Banks' 10-yard scoring pass from Sherman with catches of 49 and 38 yards. Vernon Rollins had his best game of the season defensively with 12 stops.

Iowa  @  Michigan State

W    21 - 7

Behind the hard running of Sedrick Shaw, Iowa moved to 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in the Big Ten by defeating Michigan State 21-7. During a scoreless first quarter, Iowa outgained Michigan State 128 yards to eight in total offense. The Hawkeyes got two second quarter field goals including a 50-yarder by Brion Hurley, but still trailed the Spartans 7-6 at the half. The second half featured the tough running of Shaw, who finished the game with a career high 250 yards rushing on 42 carries. It was the second best one-game performance in Iowa history. Iowa racked up 524 yards of offense, compared to 313 for Michigan State. Matt Sherman threw for 213 yards while completing 13 of 26 passes, six of which went to Tim Dwight for 115 yards. The Iowa defense stymied the Spartan ground attack, allowing only 31 yards for the day. Freshman Vernon Rollins led the team with seven tackles including one for a loss and one fumble recovery. #13 Iowa  vs  #19 Minnesota

W    84 - 77

Sadly, this was Chris Street's final home game before his death on January 19th. We can also take donations if you want to support this work. Why not women's sports or wrestling? There just isn't enough videos online to post, so 99% of the games would have no videos available, although recent interest in Women's Basketball Final Four team and the new Women's Wrestling means we will start adding outcomes and players as time permits, so we will need some help.
