Year signed with Iowa: 1993

HIGH SCHOOL: Tavian Banks attended Bettendorf High School and lived in or near Bettendorf, Iowa. He rushed for 2,388 yards and scored 42 TDs as a senior. He also excelled at soccer, earning first team all-state honors in both sports. He chose Iowa over Washington, Miami and Nebraska.

COLLEGE: He is ranked fourth on Iowa’s all-time rushing list with 2,977 yards despite only starting for one season in 1997, a backup behind Sedrick Shaw the previous seasons. He also averaged 5.9 yards per attempt, which is the highest average amongst Iowa’s top-10 career rushing leaders. He broke the school record for most rushing in a season with 1,691 yards.

He rushed for 314 yards against Tulsa in 1997 and it still stands as the all-time single-game record at Iowa. He was named 1st Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and earned third-team All-American honors that season.

PROFESSIONAL: He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL draft. He suffered a major knee injury in 1999 and tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and fibular collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee and missed over two years due to surgery and rehab. He attempted a comeback after his severe injury, but could not get back to full speed. He finished his NFL career with 49 carries for 222 yards and 1 TD.

OTHER: In 2008 Tavian Banks was inducted into Iowa High School Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2009 he was elected to Quad-City Sports Hall of Fame.

He served as assistant running backs coach for the Louisville Cardinals in 2006. He later worked in performance training and is currently the Executive Director of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
