Harold 'Hal' Bradley, Sr.      Illinois Wikipedia

Harold 'Hal' Bradley, Sr. attended Englewood High School and lived in Chicago, Illinois. He was named to the all-state football team. He played one season at Iowa in 1926, but left the team for a steady job with the US Postal Service.

He played professionally for the Chicago Cardinals in 1928, and was one of only 13 African-Americans to play in the National Football League prior to World War II and just the second African-American lineman in the history of the NFL, following Duke Slater. Slater encouraged his Chicago Cardinals team to give Bradley a shot at a roster spot, and Bradley made the team. He started one game for the Chicago Cardinals in 1928 and played in two games, which made him the second black lineman in NFL history (after Slater). His son Harold 'Hal' Bradley, Jr. also played football at Iowa, and the Bradley's were the first African-American father-son combination to play football for the University of Iowa and in the National Football League.

Born 9/7/1905 and died on 11/30/1973 at the age of 68.

FAMOUS QUOTES about Harold 'Hal' Bradley, Sr.

Harold 'Hal' Bradley, Sr. Harold 'Hal' Bradley, Jr.  on 11/8/1950 - Link to source
I was just following in my dad's footsteps. He played at Englewood and then went on to Iowa where he was a tackle in the late 20's. I guess my own biggest thrill here has just been making the team as a regular this year.

- Quoted in the Daily Iowan about why he attended Iowa.
