Rick Bayless attended Forest Lake High School and lived in Hugo, Minnesota. He was a football team captain and set school records in track in the high jump, 100 meters, and the 60-yard dash. He decided to walk on at Iowa and redshirted in 1983.

At Iowa, he was a surprise star in a 17-6 victory in Honolulu against Hawaii in 1984 during his sophomore season, when he ran for 94 yards on 16 carries when two running backs were injured early in the game.

During his junior season in 1986, Kevin Harmon was lost to injury for the season, and he filled the void, finishing the season with 1,150 yards (95.8 yards per game), and scoring 66 points. He rushed for 167 yards (154 by halftime) on eight carries vs. Northern Illinois in his first college start, and gained 110 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown vs. San Diego State in the Holiday Bowl. He was named team MVP, first team All-Big Ten and honorable mention All-American at running back.

His senior season in 1987 was plagued by injuries most of the season.

He later played one game in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings.
