Iowa's only touchdown was scored by Bernard Bennett, one of five African-American players on the team. The 5 players were nicknamed the "Orange Bowl Five", became the first African-Americans to play at the historic Orange Bowl stadium.

The Hawks had hammered to the Miami 9-yard line late in the 3rd quarter, but an offside penalty moved the ball to the 17, and then an interception was thrown on the next play. Iowa kept driving in desperation, but couldn't get into the end zone again. Iowa was also close to scoring late in the game, but the game ended on the 1-yard line. Bill Reichardt's conversion attempt had been blocked in the first quarter, which prevented the Hawks from tying the game, even if they had scored.

After the game, the Hawks spent Saturday afternoon and evening in Havana, Cuba. The trip to Cuba was arranged by the athletic department as a reward for the excellent attitude and spirit it has shown this season.
