Bob Stoops New Book A Great Read For Iowa Fans

Bob Stoops New Book A Great Read For Iowa Fans

9/13/2019 - Former Iowa player and assistant coach Bob Stoops recently published a new autobiography called "No Excuses: The Making of a Head Coach"

The book explains his rise from undersized football player to National Championship coach at Oklahoma, based on his mentoring from his dad (HS coach), Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder, and Steve Spurrier.

Since this website is based on past videos, I wanted to highlight the games that Bob Stoops mentions in his book that you might find interesting, especially if you read the book.

The book starts at this statue unveiling ceremony at OU, after his retirement.

Here are some key games during his playing days at Iowa (if I have video of the games).

When he left with Bill Snyder to rebuild Kansas State, here is the first win to end their 31-game losing streak.

Their first victory over Oklahoma

National Championship victory as Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Florida over Florida State in the 1997 Sugar Bowl

Bob Stoops announced new coach at Oklahoma

He goes into a lot of detail about how he ended up at Oklahoma instead of Iowa. Basically, he was a fan of Billy Sims, the Heisman Trophy winning running back for the Sooners. After he interviewed at Oklahoma for the job, they offered him the job immediately and said that he was the person they wanted. They had no other candidates they were pursuing. They wanted him to be the coach very badly. Iowa interviewed him as well, but they said they had other candidates to consider like Kirk Ferentz, and did not offer him the job. He even got advice from Coach Fry to take the Oklahoma job, since it was a blue blood with better resources and athletes, and he would have an easier time winning there (which was true). Reading this section made me have a better understanding of why he ended up at Oklahoma.

OU victory over Kansas State in Big 12 Championship (2000)

National Championship victory over Florida State (2000)

Roy Williams "Superman" play vs Texas (2001)

National Championship loss to LSU (2003)

National Championship loss to USC (2004)

Tough loss to Boise State in 2007 Fiesta Bowl

#5 Oklahoma victory over #2 Texas Tech

National Championship loss to Florida (2008)

Oklahoma victory over Iowa in Insight Bowl (2011)

Oklahoma upset victory over Alabama in 2011 Sugar Bowl

Joe Mixon assault video (2014)

2015 comeback win at Tennessee in 2OT (2015)

Players protest racism at OU (2016)
