Jonathan Hayes attended South Fayette Township High School and lived in South Fayette Township, Pennsylvania. He played at Iowa from 1982-1984. He started as a Linebacker in his first year, then switched to Tight End, where he caught 10 passes and had 1 TD during his sophomore year. In his junior year, he had 42 catches for 512 yards and 6 TDs. He decided to leave early for the NFL after his junior year, and was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He played most of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs (1985-1993) and finished his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1994-1996).

After his playing days, he started coaching at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops, where he helped them win the 2000 BCS National Championship.

Hayes joined Marvin Lewis's Cincinnati Bengals NFL staff in 2003 as Tight Ends coach, and won 4 AFC North titles on the way to 7 NFL playoff berths. In 2020, he became the first head coach and general manager of the St. Louis BattleHawks franchise in the revived XFL, and hired Chuck Long as his assistant coach.

Hayes's son Jaxson was selected 8th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2019 NBA Draft.
