Dean Oliver attended Mason City High School and lived in Mason City, Iowa. He was named Iowa's Mr. Basketball by the Iowa Newspaper Association and state of Iowa Player of the Year by USA Today and selected as Gatorade's Circle of Champions Player of the Year. He earned first team all-state honors in Class 4A as a senior and junior. He led his team to the Class 4A state title as a senior and junior. He earned first team all-conference honors four straight years while leading team to three straight league championships, averaging 23.5 points and five rebounds per game as a senior.
He started all but two games for the Hawkeyes in his four collegiate seasons. He played a key role in helping his squad advance to the Sweet Sixteen as a sophomore. During his senior season, he averaged 14.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. He was a three-time third-team All-Big Ten Conference selection (1999 to 2001) and led the conference in assist/turnover ratio in his senior season. Iowa won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament during his senior season. He scored 1561 points, 205 points, 561 assists and 369 rebounds in his Iowa career.
After Iowa, he was not drafted in the 2001 NBA Draft but played two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, playing mostly as a backup in 35 games. He also played internationally until 2011. In 2015, Oliver was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association basketball Hall of Fame.
He has gone into coaching as an assistant at North Dakota, Illinois State and Wisconsin.
