Frank Cuhel      Iowa Wikipedia

Frank Cuhel attended Washington High School and lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a track star, setting a high school national record in 1924 in the 220-yard low hurdles.

He began his eligibility as a sophomore in 1926, and he participated in football and track. He lettered twice in football, but was most successful as a track star. He placed second in the national championship meet in both the 220-yard low hurdles and the 120-yard high hurdles his junior season, and won the NCAA championship in the 220-yard low hurdles with an NCAA record time his senior season.

He qualified for the 1928 Olympics by running the 400-meter hurdles in 52.1 seconds, which was better than the world record at the time, but he finished 2nd in the race to Morgan Taylor.

Cuhel and Taylor both went to Amsterdam for the Olympics, and Cuhel beat Taylor and won the silver medal, while Taylor finished 3rd with the bronze.

During World War II, he was being transferred from the Pacific to the North African war zone, where he could continue his war correspondence by radio when his plane crashed outside Portugal.

Born 9/28/1904 and died on 2/22/1943 at the age of 38.
