Tony Freeman attended St. Joseph's High School and lived in Maywood, Illinois. He earned second team all-state honors as a senior after leading team to a 28-2 overall record, and was selected to compete in the Roundball Classic (New York vs. Chicago at the United Center) and City Suburban all-star games. He was MVP of East Suburban Catholic League as a junior and senior and led the team to conference titles both years, averaging 14.7 points, 6.0 assists and 4.6 rebounds as a senior.

In 2007-08, he was named Third-Team All-Big Ten by league coaches and honorable mention by league media, averaged 13.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, while leading the team with 22 steals. In 2006-07, he averaged 7.5 points and 2.9 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, and finished the season with four-straight double-figure games. He also earned the 2007 Chris Street Award.

After the 2008 season, he transferred to Southern Illinois.

His father Tony Freeman, Sr. lettered at Indiana as a member of the 1987 team that won the NCAA title.
