After falling behind 10-0 in the 1st quarter, the Hawks scored on a 47-yard TD pass from Rob Fick to Bill Schultz to make it 10-7. They took a 14-10 lead on Dave Bryant's blocked punt that Jim Caldwell returned for an 18-yard TD.

Rod Wellington rushed 2 yards for a TD to give Iowa a 21-17 lead in the second quarter, but that would be the last score for the Hawks. MSU put up 43 unanswered points, and shut out the Hawks in the 2nd half to blow the game wide open. Bob Elliott fumbled a punt at the MSU 26-yard line, which helped set up a TD drive, giving MSU a 24-21 lead that they would not give up. A strange fifth down was awarded to MSU, allowing them to kick a FG. The defense surrendered 660 yards in total offense, 489 of that coming on the ground, while the offense could only muster 272 yards.

Iowa LB Dan LaFleur was injured with torn ankle ligaments in the first quarter and required surgery after the game.
