Inside the Numbers Akron Pregame8/30/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation
The Iowa Hawkeye two-deep roster is out for the Akron game and it appears that youth will be served. 16 of the 48 position players (33%) on the two-deep roster are either true freshmen, redshirt freshmen or sophomores. Only four of those players have ever played in one game. Nine of Iowa’s starters will be doing so for the first time in their collegiate careers. 13 seniors and 23 juniors fill out the remainder of the depth chart for the Hawkeyes opener. 11 members of the initial two-deep were walk-ons to the program. Spanning the past three seasons, Iowa has started the last 29 games on offense. That streak dates back to the 1999 game at Northwestern where Iowa won the toss and deferred. During that time span, Iowa has won the toss and elected to receive 17 times and the opponent winning the toss 11 times and deferring to the second half. Against Illinois in 2000, Iowa won the toss and deferred to the second half, but Illinois chose to take the wind and Iowa began the game on offense. Iowa averaged 64,665 fans per game last year at Kinnick Stadium. That was good for 21st in the nation. Iowa outscored its opponents in the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd quarters last year, scoring more than 107 points in each quarter. But the Hawkeyes managed just 43 fourth-quarter points compared to 74 for their opponents. Iowa scored 72 points off of 21 turnovers last year while their opponents managed 64 points off of the same number of Iowa turnovers.
