Drew Tate attended Robert E. Lee High School and lived in Baytown, Texas. He was coached in high school by his stepfather Dick Olin, and ranked first in the Texas high school football record book in career pass attempts and completions. He also ranks second in career passing yards with 12,183, and third in career touchdown passes with 113. He played in the 2003 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He originally committed to Texas A&M, but de-committed after R. C. Slocum was replaced with Dennis Franchione.
During the 2004 season, he was named 1st Team all-Big Ten and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He attained fame when he threw a 56-yard, game-winning touchdown pass to senior Warren Holloway as time expired in the 2005 Capitol One Bowl, earning bowl game MVP. He finished his career with 8,292 yards and 61 touchdown passes.
He played 12 seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for multiple teams. He was part of the Grey Cup championship teams (2007 Saskatchewan Roughriders and 2014 Calgary Stampeders). In 2014, he was the CFL rushing touchdowns leader.
