Gary Grouwinkel       

HIGH SCHOOL: Gary Grouwinkel attended Wapello High School and lived in or near Columbus Junction, Iowa. He was a standout athlete, and decided to attend Iowa.

COLLEGE: He was one of only a few players that played in two Rose Bowls (1957 and 1959).

OTHER: He became head football coach at West Branch High School in Iowa. He coached high school ball until 1964, including a state championship at Ottumwa High School. He spent a dozen years as an assistant coach at five different colleges, including Iowa (Ray Nagel) in 1968 and 1969. He coached at Northwestern from 1970-72. In 1975, he became the offensive co-coordinator at Florida State University. In 1982, he got back into coaching at York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois.

His grandson is former Iowa snapper Austin Spiewak.

Born 11/7/1936 and died on 11/28/2024 at the age of 88.
