HIGH SCHOOL: JoAnn Hamlin attended Winfield High School and lived in or near Douglass, Kansas. She was a four-year letterwinner and starter in basketball, and holds the school records for career points (1,609), rebounds (785), blocks (210) and steals (157), along with the school's single-game records for points (36), free throws made (10), offensive rebounds (8), defensive rebounds (16), rebounds (21), blocks (9) and steals (6). She was named KBCA all-state first team as a senior and was named two-time all-state first team Class 5A. She was a three-time first team all-league selection and three-time Blue Collar Player of the Year. She holds the school record in the shot put, discus and javelin.

COLLEGE: She played her first college season at Kansas State, under assistant coach and former Iowa standout Jennie Lillis, before transferring to Iowa for the 2006-2007 season.
