Matt Rodgers attended Walpole High School and lived in Walpole, Massachusetts. He was a Parade, Bally and Super Prep all-American, and the No. 2 QB in the nation according to Parade. He was the Massachusetts Player of the Year by USA Today and Gatorade, and New England Player of the Year by Gatorade. He completed 297 of 501 attempts (59.3 percent) for 4,574 yards and 58 touchdowns. He holds the school records for TD passes in a game (six) and career (58). He chose Iowa over Pitt, Miami (FL) and Boston College.
He redshirted his freshman year, and was a holder on placements during his freshman season. As a sophomore, he took over the starting QB job. He passed for 2,222 yards, but the Hawks missed a bowl game for the first time since the 1980 season. He was named Honorable mention all-Big Ten selection.
As a junior, he threw for 2,228 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for nine touchdowns. He helped lead Iowa to the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl. He was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year along with his teammate, Nick Bell. In the Rose Bowl, he threw for a touchdown and ran for two more touchdowns.
In 1991, he was the first team All-Big Ten quarterback for the second straight year, throwing for 2,275 yards and 14 touchdowns. He helped lead Iowa to a 10-1-1 record and finished the year in the Top 10.
He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1992 NFL Draft.
He is the son of former Iowa basketball player, Jimmy Rodgers.
