RECAP

Iowa jumped to a 21-0 lead, and held off a late comeback to stay unbeaten.

Iowa's 1960 season had another miraculous play in the second quarter when defensive lineman, Dayton Perry returned a fumble recovery 84 yards for a touchdown. Purdue quarterback, Bernie Allen who would go on to play over 900 games in Major League baseball fumbled the ball right into Perry's arms with :50 seconds left in the first half. The play gave Iowa a 14-0 lead at the half. The Hawkeyes then came out in the second half and put up another touchdown, when Wilburn Hollis scored his second touchdown of the day on a 6 yard run, making the score 21-0 with 9:00 to play in the third quarter. Purdue answered right away with a touchdown of their own, and made things interesting in the fourth when they tacked on another to make the game a one score game. Iowa was able to control the ball and minimize Purdue's passing attach to hold on for the win.

Iowa set a Big Ten record by scoring in 70 straight games. The last time Iowa was shut out was in 1952 against Notre Dame.

Clips from highlights run from 27:02-27:50.

PLAYER GAME QUOTES

Dayton Perry It seemed as though it took me at least 5 minutes to run for that touchdown. It as my first touchdown in my whole life. How far did I go? Eighty-four yards-wow! That was the first time I ever carried the ball. How's that for an average-84 yards a shot! All I thought about when that ball popped into my arms was run-just run. I thought I'd never get there. I'll bet I looked over my left shoulder 12 times-on almost every step. I kept seeing that big number 86 and I thought sure we was gaining on me. Another 10 yards and I'm afraid I'd have pooped out. It was like a dream.
