RECAP

A huge traffic jam kept many fans from missing the opening quarter. It was a first quarter looked promising for the young 29 point underdog Hawkeyes against the mighty Irish, but the inexperience of 10 sophomores started to catch up. The Notre Dame offense was hard to stop, amassing a school record 35 first downs and gaining 587 yards. Denny Green scored 2 TDs for the Hawks. Al Bream caught 4 passes for 106 yards. Larry Lawrence replaced the injured Eddie Podolak at QB, and completed 11 of 25 passes for 210 yards. Fullback Tim Sullivan also did not play because of an injury.

Irish backup quarterback Joe Theisman came in towards the end of the game and completed one pass for 14 yards. He also returned punts for Notre Dame

One of the Notre Dame greats and a member of the four horsemen, Elmer Layden was present for the game. Layden went to high school at Davenport Central High School. He was also the NFL commissioner in the 1940's.
