A controversial call against the Wildcats led to some scries of home-court advantage, as Herb Thompson was fouled late in the game while trapped in the back court, with Iowa leading by 1 point. He missed both free throws, but Northwestern was unable to score on the ensuing possession.

Kenny Buckles was Iowa's hero for the night, scoring 28 points, including nine fields goals on 14 attempts, and 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Center Bob Miller wasn't far behind with 18 points, shooting 10 for 13 from the free throw line.
