Head Coach: Jesse Hawley

RECAP

Before traveling to Columbia for the game, coach Jesse Hawley was warned not to take Archie Alexander, Iowa's talented 3-year starting lineman black tackle, along for the game. Fearing troubles similar to what Frank Kinney Holbrook, Iowa's first black football player, encountered in a game against Missouri in 1896, Hawley agreed to leave Alexander behind, and was livid but reportedly felt he had little choice but to play by Missouri's rules. When the Iowa team arrived in Columbia, a mob of local townspeople met the team to ensure that Alexander was not with them.

With temperatures in the mid-80s in an era where many players lined up both ways - Iowa brought only 19 players to Columbia - the game proceeded in plodding fashion. Missouri, coming off a scoreless tie against Rolla, knocked Iowa quarterback Paul Curry unconscious and won 5-0 on a field goal and a safety. Hawley vowed that no team of his would ever again face Missouri, and they didn't play again until the 2010 Insight Bowl.
