In what turned out to be a home game for Idaho (campus only 7 miles from the event), the Hawks struggled in the 1st half, falling 10 points behind at half. They tied the game at 42, and lead 52-51 for the first time in the 2nd half. Idaho took a 57-55 lead with 1 minute left, and Bob Hansen responded to tie the game with 35 seconds left. The Vandals appeared to have won the game at the buzzer, but their putback shot was later ruled too late. In overtime, Idaho was about to take a 4-point lead with under a minute left, but a charging call was made on the fast break, and Jerry Dennard hit two free throws to tie the game at 65-65. After two Vandal free throws, Hansen tied the game again with 35 seconds left at 67-67, but Idaho ran out the clock and the shot bounced around the rim before dropping through the rim with no time remaining. The Hawks were plagued by foul trouble, and most of the starters fouled out in the game. One of the announcers was Washington State coach George Raveling (in the crowd to review the officials for the NCAA), who was brought out of the stands to add commentary. One year later, he would become the Iowa head coach.
