Mike Humpal attended New Hampton High School and lived in New Hampton, Iowa. He was an Elite-Team All-State player in football, 2-time state wrestling champion and 2-time state runner-up 110 meter high hurdler.

At Iowa, he recorded 49 tackles in 2006 as a junior, and had a breakout senior season recording 123 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, and 3 interceptions.

He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 6th Round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
