RECAP

Iowa women's wrestling won the national title in thrilling fashion. North Central and Iowa were neck-and-neck going into the final match between Iowa's Kylie Welker and North Central's Yelena Makoyed. Welker dominated with an 11-0 technical fall win. The Hawkeyes had 12 of their 15 wrestlers earn All-American status and six total national champions with Emilie Gonzalez, Ava Bayless, Felicity Taylor, Reese Larramendy, Marlynne Deede and Welker.

At 101, the Hawkeye pair of No. 1 Emilie Gonzalez and No. 2 Sterling Dias faced off in the championship bout, with Gonzalez ending on top with a 4-0 decision, earning the first national title for the program. Second-ranked Ava Bayless defeated Lock Haven’s No. 4 Kaelani Shufeldt via decision at 109 pounds. No. 3 Brianna Gonzalez faced off with No. 4 Felicity Taylor, with Taylor winning by decision, 9-2. At 143, second-ranked Reese Larramendy picked up the first pin for Iowa in the finals, finishing every match with a technical fall. Marlynne Deede captured her second title, and first as a Hawkeye at 155 with a 9-3 decision. With Iowa leading by just .5 points as a team, Welker took it into her own hands to finish the job at 170 to take home the team title.
