Three years later, he was named head cross country coach. In 1997, he took over as head coach of the men’s track and field program, and by 2011, he was director of both men’s and women’s programs. In 2011, the men’s track and field team also won the Big Ten team title.

He retired in 2014 after 79 Big Ten individual championships and 53 All-American honors during his time as head coach.
