Iowa's dream season came to an end with a 5-1 loss to #1 Old Dominion, who won their 3rd straight national championship. But the Hawks proved they could compete with the best teams in the country, and the runner-up finish is the highest finish in school history.

Iowa's defense held up to the Lady Monarch's offensive attack of 14 shots on goal, keeping them scoreless in the first 25 minutes. They had 6 penalty corners, and finally scored with 9:23 left in the first half. Iowa came back five minutes later to tie the game. Patti Wanner tipped a free hit to Kim Herrmann who smacked the ball into the net from the 25-yard line, leaving the score tied 1-1 at halftime. But in the second half, the #1 team was too much offensively for the Hawks. The Lady Monarchs came out quickly in the second half, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes to claim the title.

Old Dominion finished the game with 35 shots on goal and 12 penalty corners. The Hawkeyes took 11 shots on goal and had only three penalty comers.
